Weekend Wrap-Up for August 10th

Posted on:

All three Blues senior squads took to the pitch this past weekend at Twin Elm, all looking to build some momentum ahead of some tough matchups heading into the last weekend of the summer season.

The day started with the Blues 3rds taking on the Ottawa Wolves in EORU Div 1 action. A previous matchup between these two teams resulted in an overwhelming win for the Blues and this day was no different. Jumping out to a 73 point lead at halftime, the 3rds continued the momentum into the final 40 minutes with another 60+ points. The final score was Blues 3rd XV 130, Ottawa Wolves 0.

In FRQ action, the Blues 1sts and 2nds took on a shorthanded Ormstown Saracens club. Due to a shortage of players, the Blues 2nds ended up playing 10s against Ormstown instead of the full squad. A quick start for the Blues led to 6 unanswered tries in the first half and a half time score of 38 – 0 for the 2nds. The second half featured some inconsistent play from the Blues, allowing Ormstown to get back some of those points. Ormstown outscored the Blues 20-7 in final 20 minutes. The final score was Blues 2nd XV 45, Ormstown 20.

In the final match of the day, the Blues 1st XV took to the pitch needing to gain maximum points in the standings heading into the last week of the season.

The Blues opened the scoring early with a try on the wing by Mike Abide, followed up with the conversion by Brendan McGovern. The Blues continued with strong play and scored again quickly with Sean Harrison making a break through the centres and touching down in between the posts for the second try of the match. Another McGovern conversion made it 14-0 for the Blues. Three more converted tries by Graham O’Neill and David Worsley gave the Blues a 35 point lead after 40 minutes.

The second half opened up the same way the first had ended, this time with Brendan McGovern crashing over for his first try of the match. Ormstown managed to reply with a converted try of their own to make it 40-7 to the Blues. A quick reply by the Blues’ McGovern restored the 40 point lead for the Blues.

It was at this point that Ormstown were able to claw back into the match with three unanswered tries to finish the game. Final score was 47-28 for the Blues.

This result, combined with the Irish win over Beaconsfield, sets up an all-important rematch against the Irish on August 17th. With the Irish just 3 points ahead in the standings, promotion into the FRQ Premier League depends on this game. Kickoff for the Blues 1st XV is at 3pm. The Blues 3rds take on Lanark RFC at noon, followed by the 2nds taking on the Irish at 1:30pm.
