Blues vs Irish To Determine Promotion Into FRQ Super League [Update]

Posted on: August 17th, 2013 by Mark Ward

Another regular season is coming to a close today with all three Blues senior squads playing on the day. For the Blues 1st XV and 2nd XV, a familiar foe stands in their way of winning the division. Both the Blues 1sts and 2nds will take on the Ottawa Irish to determine the winner of their leagues.

Not to be forgotten, the Blues 3rds start the day with a tough matchup as well. They take on undefeated Lanark RFC to end their regular season. The day starts with this match and kickoff is at noon.

For the Blues 2nds, the matchup against the Irish will determine the Division 1 Reserve league. With each team having a single loss on the season, only bonus points separate them. The Blues beat the Irish earlier in the season 20-19 and look to repeat that outcome today.

Meanwhile, the Blues 1sts will look to defeat the Irish and jump ahead of them in the standings while doing so. The winner of Division 1 will be promoted into the FRQ Super League next season.*  The Blues/Irish matchups are always a little intense, to say the least. Adding promotion to the equation will certainly make things a little more interesting.

Kickoff times

  • 12:00pm – Blues 3rd XV vs Lanark RFC
  • 1:30pm – Blues 2nd XV vs Ottawa Irish
  • 3:00pm – Blues 1st XV vs Ottawa Irish

We hope to see you out at the park, but if not, follow along on Twitter for quick updates.

If you can’t make it out to Twin Elm today, we’ll be updating from the sidelines as much as we can. It’s going to be a great matchup.

[UPDATE: Promotion into the Super League was also dependent upon the bonus point situation for the season. Heading into the match, Irish were at 43 points and Blues at 40. Winner gets 4 points automatically with the try bonus and loss bonus having an impact on the final standings.]
